Adult Neurogenesis and Olfactory Sensory Neuron Regeneration
Olfactory sensory neurons are among the few nerve cells that are in direct and unprotected contact with the chemical environment. This unusual situation makes them vulnerable to injury and environmental insult by chemical stressors, toxicants, and pathogens. As a consequence, olfactory sensory neurons have a limited life span and only survive for for a few weeks after they are born. Thus, they need to undergo constant replacement by a process of adult neurogensis to maintain smell sensation. In addition to the maintenance of individual sensory neurons that are lost on a daily basis, the olfactory epithelium also shows a strong regenerative responses to tissue injury. Distinct neuronal stem/progenitor cells conribute to tissue maintenance under physiological and to tissue repair under injury conditions. We aim to understand the molecular signals and selective stem cell properties that contribute these processes using zebrafish as an experimental research model.
